Psyllium Husk Powder vs. Capsules: Dose, Cost and What the Label Says

Last updated October 11, 2026 · By the Fiber Society team

A typical psyllium husk capsule holds about half a gram of psyllium: 0.52 g on over-the-counter store-brand labels, and 500 to 625 mg on most supplement labels. One rounded teaspoon of sugar-free psyllium powder holds about 3.4 g, so matching it takes 6 to 7 capsules, each swallowed one at a time with a full 8 oz glass of water. Same husk, different count, different pace through the bottle.

Key takeaways

  • Per capsule, labels list 0.52 g (Target and Meijer OTC capsules), 500 mg (Konsyl), 525 mg (Nature's Way), or 625 mg (Yerba Prima), per the labels as of October 2026.
  • The 3.4 g in one rounded teaspoon of sugar-free powder (5.8 g), or one rounded tablespoon of the sugar-sweetened kind (12 g), is about 7 half-gram capsules.
  • Every psyllium label we read directs at least 8 oz of liquid per dose; for OTC products that is an FDA rule (21 CFR 201.319). Capsule labels add "swallow 1 capsule at a time."
  • Days per container is the real cost figure: a 160-capsule bottle is 32 five-capsule doses; a 660 g tub of powder is 114 teaspoon doses.

How much psyllium is in one capsule?

It depends on the panel. OTC store-brand capsules carry a Drug Facts panel that reads "Psyllium husk approximately 0.52 g" per capsule (Target Fiber Laxative and Meijer Fiber Laxative, per their DailyMed labels as of October 2026). Supplement-labeled capsules list milligrams: Konsyl Daily Psyllium Fiber Capsules 500 mg per capsule, Nature's Way 525 mg, Yerba Prima 625 mg, BulkSupplements 1,400 mg per 2 capsules. Metamucil Psyllium Super Fiber Capsules and 21st Century Psyllium Fiber print no psyllium weight, only 2 g of dietary fiber per 5 capsules, per the labels as of October 2026.

Psyllium husk powder vs. capsules: the gram math

Every row is per the label as of October 2026, as recorded in NIH DSLD or DailyMed; "Units for 3.4 g" is our division.

Form (label, Oct 2026) Psyllium per unit Units for 3.4 g Liquid the label directs
OTC psyllium capsule (Target, Meijer) About 0.52 g per capsule 6.5, so 7 At least 8 oz per 5-capsule dose; swallow 1 at a time
Konsyl Daily Psyllium Fiber Capsules 500 mg 500 mg per capsule 6.8, so 7 At least 8 oz per 3 capsules
Nature's Way Psyllium Husk 525 mg per capsule 6.5 (6 capsules = 3.15 g) A full 8 oz glass per 6-capsule dose
Yerba Prima Psyllium Husks Caps 625 mg per capsule 5.4 (5 capsules = 3.1 g) At least 8 oz per 4- to 5-capsule serving
Metamucil Psyllium Super Fiber Capsules Not printed; 5 capsules = 2 g dietary fiber Not calculable At least 8 oz; swallow 1 at a time, upright
Sugar-free psyllium powder (Publix Fiber Therapy Sugar Free; Metamucil Super Fiber Powder Orange Sugar-Free) About 3.4 g per rounded teaspoon (5.8 g) 1 teaspoon At least 8 oz
Konsyl Original Formula powder 6 g per rounded teaspoon Just over half a teaspoon At least 8 oz
NOW Psyllium Husk Powder 9 g per level tablespoon About 40% of a tablespoon At least 12 oz, consumed immediately
Fiber Society Daily Fiber Blend 2.5 g per 14.2 g scoop (with 7.3 g acacia) Not designed to match; 1 scoop = 10 g total fiber 350 to 400 ml cold water

How many psyllium capsules equal a teaspoon?

It depends on whose teaspoon. The rounded teaspoon on sugar-free OTC powders is about 3.4 g: 7 capsules at 0.52 g or 500 mg, 6 to 7 at 525 mg, 5 to 6 at 625 mg. Konsyl Original's rounded teaspoon is a 6 g dose, or 12 half-gram capsules.

Psyllium powder dosage, per the labels

OTC powders direct one rounded teaspoon (about 3.4 g) in 8 oz up to 3 times daily; Konsyl Original a 6 g teaspoon 1 to 3 times daily; NOW a 9 g tablespoon once daily in 12 oz. MedlinePlus describes psyllium as usually taken one to three times daily in 8 oz of liquid. Capsule servings land lower, 1.5 to 3.15 g, and several labels in both forms say to start with one serving a day. For timing, see the best time to take fiber.

The choking warning: why both forms need a full glass of water

Psyllium swells when it meets water. FDA's rule for OTC drug products containing psyllium (listed as "plantago seed" in 21 CFR 201.319) requires this warning: "Taking this product without adequate fluid may cause it to swell and block your throat or esophagus and may cause choking. Do not take this product if you have difficulty in swallowing." The same rule requires directions to say the product is taken "with at least 8 ounces (a full glass) of water or other fluid." Supplement-labeled psyllium sits outside that drug rule, yet nearly every supplement label we opened carries a version; Metamucil's capsules read "NOTICE: Take this product with at least 250 ml (a full glass) of liquid. Taking without enough liquid may cause choking."

Capsules add a direction powders never need: "Swallow 1 capsule at a time" and, on Metamucil's label, "take in an upright position." A capsule is dry, packed husk, so the water has to be there when it opens.

Days per bottle: the cost math without a price tag

We did not verify current manufacturer prices, so here is the label half of the cost math. Per the labels as of October 2026, Target's 160-capsule bottle is 32 five-capsule doses (about 11 days at the 3-dose maximum); Metamucil's 200 capsules are 40 five-capsule servings (10 days at 4 a day). Publix's 660 g tub of sugar-free powder is 114 teaspoon doses (38 days at 3 a day), and our pouch is 28 scoops (14 days at the 2-scoop maximum).

Divide what you paid by those dose counts for cost per dose; to compare capsule brands per gram of psyllium, divide price by capsules times grams per capsule. For our powder, a pouch is 28 scoops, so the per-scoop cost is simply the pouch price divided by 28 (20% less on Subscribe & Save).79.

Who tends to prefer capsules, and who doesn't

Capsules suit people who travel, who will not stir a drink, or who dislike psyllium's texture in water. The trade is the count: six or seven capsules for a 3 g dose, one at a time, with a full glass. Powder suits people who want more grams per dose or who adjust by the half teaspoon. The trade is texture: McRorie's 2015 review classes psyllium as soluble, viscous, and non-fermented, noting it "remains gelled throughout the large bowel." That gel is why a teaspoon in 8 oz thickens if it sits.

Is one form more effective? The husk is the same material either way; the labels differ on grams, 1.5 to 3.15 g per capsule serving versus 3.4 to 9 g per powder serving, so match the capsule count to your old teaspoon. See acacia vs. psyllium for what the fiber itself does.

A different approach: a blend with less psyllium

A third route is a blend where psyllium is a minority ingredient. Our scoop is 10 g of dietary fiber, 7.3 g of it organic acacia (gum arabic) and 2.5 g psyllium husk. McRorie describes gum arabic as a low-viscosity fiber, which is why the scoop is designed to drink thin: most of the fiber is acacia and psyllium is kept to 2.5 g. More total fiber per glass than a 3.4 g teaspoon, no capsule counting, but not a substitute for someone who wants 6 to 10 g of psyllium a day. See Metamucil alternatives and fiber gummies vs. powder for the other options.

Label-reading checklist for psyllium capsules and powders

  1. Find the psyllium grams. Drug Facts: the "Active ingredient" line. Supplement Facts: milligrams per serving, divided by capsules per serving. If only "dietary fiber" is listed, that is your number.
  2. Multiply capsules per dose by doses per day. Labels run from 1 capsule once daily (Herbal Secrets, 500 mg) to 5 capsules up to 4 times a day (Metamucil).
  3. Read the liquid line. 8 oz is the floor on most labels; NOW's powder says 12 oz, ours 350 to 400 ml.
  4. Divide the container by the dose to learn how long it lasts.
  5. Check the rest of the panel. Metamucil's orange sugar-free powder lists aspartame; its unflavored 4-in-1 powder lists 4 g of sugars per 7 g teaspoon. Our label says 2 hours apart from oral medications; ask your pharmacist about yours.

Where Fiber Society fits

Full disclosure: Fiber Society sells a powder. Our Daily Fiber Blend (Strawberry Lemonade) gives you 10 g of dietary fiber (36% DV) in one 14.2 g scoop: 7.3 g organic acacia, 2.5 g psyllium husk, 1.95 g Fibersol-2, and 300 mg BeniCaros. It has 0 g total sugars, 0 g added sugars, about 20 calories, and is sweetened with stevia (Reb M); no sucralose, aspartame, or synthetic dyes; vegan and gluten-free. It is high in fiber: 10 g per glass, 0 g sugar, about 20 calories. A pouch is 28 servings: 20% off on a 4-week subscription, or one-time at the regular price.

It is gentle by design; start with half a scoop for the first few days. Mix one scoop in 350 to 400 ml of cold water, stir, and drink promptly. Do not exceed 2 scoops a day, and take it at least 2 hours apart from oral medications. Always use at least a full glass of liquid; too little liquid is a choking risk, and it is not for anyone who has difficulty swallowing.

FAQ: psyllium husk powder vs. capsules

How many psyllium capsules should I take a day?

Follow your bottle. Per the labels as of October 2026: Nature's Way, 6 capsules once daily; Konsyl, 3 capsules 1 to 3 times daily; OTC store brands, 5 capsules up to 3 times daily; Metamucil, 2 to 5 capsules up to 4 times daily; Yerba Prima, 4 or 5 capsules 1 to 3 times a day.

How many psyllium capsules equal a teaspoon?

About 7 half-gram capsules for the 3.4 g rounded teaspoon on sugar-free OTC powders, about 12 for Konsyl Original's 6 g teaspoon, and 5 to 6 at 625 mg per capsule (Yerba Prima).

Do you have to drink water with psyllium capsules?

Yes. Every capsule label we read directs at least 8 oz per dose, and FDA's OTC rule requires that direction plus a choking warning. Swallow one capsule at a time, and avoid psyllium in any form if you have difficulty swallowing.

Is one teaspoon of psyllium a day enough fiber?

A 3.4 g teaspoon lists 3 g of dietary fiber on Metamucil's sugar-free label, about 11% of the 28 g Daily Value. It is a top-up, not a day's fiber.
