Nutrition · The fiber gap

Government data: 9 in 10 women miss their fiber target. It’s not protein you’re short on.

The average woman gets about 15g of fiber a day against a 25g target. Here’s why that last 10 grams is so hard to eat, and the strawberry-lemonade habit that closes it in one glass.

The fiber gap: 90%+ of women fall short by about 10g a day, 97% of men by about 20g
The fiber gap, in one picture.

Walk down any grocery aisle and you’ll see it: protein bars, protein cereal, protein coffee. We are, collectively, very focused on protein.

Meanwhile, the nutrient most of us are actually short on barely gets a mention. According to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, more than 90% of women and 97% of men don’t eat the recommended amount of fiber.

You might be doing all the “right” things: the protein, the salads, the big water bottle. Most days, you’re still likely about 10 grams of fiber short, because almost everyone is.

Most women need about 25 grams of fiber a day. The average is closer to 15.

The 10-gram gap

Daily fiber: recommended vs. typical

Women · recommended 25g
Women · typical 15g
Men · recommended 38g
Men · typical 18g

Recommended = National Academies adequate intake, adults 19–50. Typical = approximate U.S. average.

That leaves most women about 10 grams short every day, and most men about 20. Not once in a while. Every day.

What fiber does for you*

  • Supports regularity, so mornings run on schedule
  • Helps you feel fuller after meals
  • Feeds the beneficial bacteria in your gut

So why don’t we just eat more of it?

Because 10 extra grams is a lot more food than it sounds like.

What an extra 10g of fiber looks like

2 medium pears≈ 11g
1¼ cups raspberries≈ 10g
⅔ cup cooked lentils≈ 10g
1 glass Fiber Society10g

…every single day, on top of everything you already eat.

Pears and lentils are wonderful. Eating them every single day, on top of everything else, is where good intentions fall apart. So most people reach for a supplement, and that’s usually where the habit dies.

Why so many people give up on fiber supplements

PowdersGritty and thick

Classic psyllium powders work, but many are orange-flavored, gritty, and thicken into sludge if you don’t drink fast. A typical serving is 3–4g.

GummiesToo little, too sweet

Gummies taste like candy, but most deliver just 2–5g of fiber per serving, and many add sugar. Reaching 10g can take six or more gummies.

CapsulesToo many to swallow

Capsules are tasteless, but many hold around half a gram of fiber each, so a meaningful dose means a handful of pills.

It isn’t a willpower problem. It’s a product problem.

What a daily fiber fix actually needs

If you’re going to close a 10-gram gap every day, the thing you use has to clear five bars:

  1. Enough fiber to matter: about 10g, not 2 or 3.
  2. A taste you’d choose even if it had no fiber in it.
  3. A texture that stays a drink: no sludge, no grit.
  4. No sugar, and no sucralose or aspartame.
  5. Nothing hidden: every ingredient and every dose on the label.

Most options clear one or two. So we made the one we’d actually drink.

Questions people ask

What does it taste like?

Like light strawberry lemonade: bright, a little tart and just sweet enough. It’s sweetened with stevia (Reb M): no sugar, no sucralose, no aspartame.

Will it make me bloated?

Any new fiber can cause a little extra gas at first, which is why we suggest half a scoop for the first three days. Most of the fiber comes from acacia, a slow-fermenting fiber, and drinking plenty of water helps.

Will it get thick like other fiber drinks?

It’s designed not to. Most of the fiber comes from acacia, which dissolves nearly clear, and the psyllium is kept to 2.5g of an extra-fine grind. Mix it into 12–14 oz of cold water and drink it within a few minutes.

Is it OK with medication or a GLP-1?

Take it at least 2 hours apart from oral medications, and check with your healthcare provider first if you take medication (including GLP-1s), are pregnant or nursing, or have a medical condition.
